Back to the Roots!

Earlier this year I finally returned to Grenada, the Caribbean island where part of her family heritage lies, for the first time in twelve years.

Inspired by my visit I found myself longing for the island's lush landscapes and greenery. I  began searching for ways to surround myself with that same sense of nature back in the Netherlands. I transformed my memories and experiences into ceramic objects, using the cocoa beans and spices I had secretly brought back with me. I created plaster moulds, preserving their forms in clay so that, in a way, I could carry them with me forever.

In Back to the Roots, I celebrate my heritage. I pay tribute to not only to the beautiful island of Grenada, but also to the city where I grew up: Hengelo.

During my mini-residency, I experienced the city up close once again. I translated the impressions and iconic places of Hengelo into a new ceramic work, which I presented in Oogst's exhibition space.
